Theater Backdrops

4 Jun

Over the past two weeks I was commissioned to paint up some backdrops for a children’s theater group and I’m here to report that they’re finished! (Yes, a vast empty white canvas was what my sweet turtle was crawling all over.) They were actually finished and delivered on Sunday but it took this long to get my life and apartment back together. Anyway, there were 3 sets:

1. 8′x6′ Classroom setting, original sketch and final backdrop:

2. 8′x12′ Kitchen setting, original sketch and final backdrop:

3. 8′x6′ Girl’s Bedroom setting, original sketch:

All in all, it was a fun project which I would undoubtebly do again. It was a little pressing doing all three of the rather large canvases in 2 weeks, but they came out mostly well. Hopefully I’ll get to see the show next week and get some photos of the backdrops in action!

While you were out…

Dear heavens! It’s really been a week! It’s been quite a busy one. Let’s use the bullet points for the quick recap:

*Friday – First Friday and a couple of competition openings in Old City followed by a movie date w/ the boyfriend to see Slumdog Millionaire. Still waiting and wanting to see Coraline.

*Saturday – Built partition #1 for production. Opening at Studio 27.28 for Kevin Margitich; fell in love with and bought two charming little paintings:

*Sunday – Built partition #2 for production. Played Mario Galaxy. Picked up more furniture for the show. Called out of work.

*Monday – Built door partition, painted & moved all of the furniture and partition pieces to the theater for “load in”. Spent several hours assembling, destroying, and rethinking the set, followed by several hours of Tech rehearsal.

*Tuesday – My real job till 3pm. More set work to get the dang thing up and functional. Followed by 2 tech rehearsals and a run through. Followed by MORE set prep. Home and asleep by 1:30am.

And that just about brings us to TODAY! Tonight are the final dress rehearsals for the opening night tomorrow!!! Tomorrow’s also the boyfriend’s quarter life birthday – which will be celebrated when he crawls home from the US v. Mexico soccer game in Ohio in the wee hours of the morning.

It’s been a whole lot of stressful fast paced fun working with the theater group, but my friends are starting to wonder where I am and my body’s starting to wonder if this sleep deprivation thing is going to be a regular thing or not. A couple of teaser photos from last night’s run through are on the flickr page (of course), and a couple of my favorites are:
