Colorful Impulse Purchasing

25 Jun

Buddha%20Bank

While waiting in line to purchase a copy of Stranger Than Fiction at Borders earlier this week my eye was pulled in several directions by a couple of very colorful and exciting items lining the check-out area for impulse purchasing. The first was one of these gems, the Buddha Buddha Bank (specifically the bright pink peace Buddha). About 8 inches high and made of resin from what I can gather, these little Buddhas which appear more like fat happy babies, have replaced the ubiquitous piggy bank. What the lavender Wisdom Buddha and my spare change have to do with each other is beyond me, but it sure would be cute sitting on my bookshelf. Or perhaps the orangish Love Buddha, my spare change could use a little love. (But seriously – these have as much taste as a Buddy Christ Bobblehead)

The second very attractively colored item I noticed is the new 12 month color-a-month planner set Moleskine has just released for 2010. Feast your eyes on this beauty:

Moleskine-Volant-Planners-3-400

Moleskine-Volant-Planners-2-400

Moleskine-Volant-Planners-5-500

It’s not really my organizing style – but how great is that little stack of colorful Moleskines?! Each book is set up in a daily calendar format, one day per page, with time notes and extra writing space. It looks like they even come with STICKERS! I’m more of a monthly calendar kind of gal (I like to see the big picture), but maybe they’ll apply this type of set to their art book line or something.

In the name of financial modesty and declutterizing my home for the pending move, I left with only the DVD and decided to stash these colorful vessels of change and dates on my wish list. Also, I made up at least two words in this post, but I’m not apologizing.

love letters

I’m currently in love with the new King & Queen of Hearts stamps. I mean – what’s not to love? I’m not one to go into the post office and pick up one of the boring first class stamp books, no no – it’s always the fun stamps, and why not since they don’t cost extra. I just finished using up my Star Wars stamps (no, I’m not kidding – I’m that big of a dork) so hello love stamps. Which brings me to another point. Why don’t we write love letters anymore? Or for that matter, any letters? I try to write as often as possible, at least a postcard – but there’s really no way one can compete with the internet. It’s just a shame that the people who see most of my cute stamps are the people I pay bills to. That’s it, today I write letters.

turtly goodness.

day four : filler post

17 Oct

tonight (this morning) i sketched out my next painting and laid down the background for it. sometimes i wish that oil paint dried faster, but i can’t bring myself to use acrylics anymore. i just seem to like the texture and color of oil better. maybe i’m addicted to the smell now and can’t go cold turkey, who know. i have a point here, and the point is that i have to find something else to blog about while my current work is unavailable.

then i found this photo that i’ve been carrying around from house to house for years. it was from one of my great great aunt’s photo albums (i think). i don’t even know who it’s of.

i’ve always wanted to do something with this, but i’ve never really sat down to plan or design something around it. i could always just frame it and hang it on the wall, but that doesn’t seem to do it justice. the feet of this woman also bothered me. i feel like the top foot is facing backwards. it reminds me a lot of Wyeth’s Christina’s World.

i’m not entirely sure where this is going, but it’s just one of those pieces of an idea that needs to be put out there i guess. i should go to sleep, but my room smells like liquin. on that note, i think i’m using that particular medium the wrong way, becuase i like to build my paint up and keep it fairly thick, just thin enough to get it off the brush really. basically i could be using linseed oil or thinner and get a better effect without the translucency. any ideas for a better medium?

also, i opened up my blog commenting to everyone, blogger user or not, so feel free to leave some constructive commentary.
